MUSINGS AT GRADE 2A
During the UOI classes students were given a political map of India on which they marked the natural resources of different states. The students worked in the think-pair and share strategy where they chose a scenario and wrote about its causes and effects on humans and the environment. They further attempted a formative assessment and made posters on the uses and conservation of natural resources. The unit came to an end with the students attempting their summative assessment on natural resources and writing their reflection on the unit in their process journals. Students revisited the rules of prepositions, genders and singular/plural during their English classes. They also wrote a paragraph on how they spent their weekend applying these concepts. They were also assessed on their understanding of the same. Students also did narrative writing on the glimpses of their journey in grade 2. During their Math classes, students attempted their formative assessment on division. They were further tuned into probability where they understood the usage of terms like impossible, likely, unlikely and certain. They also gained knowledge on the concept of ‘Time’ wherein they checked the time and marked it on clocks. Terms like half past, quarter to and quarter past were also explored by them. They also attempted a summative assessment on the concepts done so far. During their Hindi lessons students were able to recite a poem ‘ Bataao sabako jagaao sabako’.They also practiced writing sentences. They revisited the grammar concepts like ‘Sangya’ (Noun), ‘Sarvnaam’ (Pronoun) and ‘Kriya’(Verb) through cards activity For their Ab-initio lessons they revised all maatraas ( ‘aa’’e’ ‘i’ ‘ee’ ‘o’) and written words. They revised Ginatee (counting) , ‘rangon ke naam’ ‘falon ke naam’ ‘angon ke naam’ etc. During their PE classes students continued to hone several skills for skating. During soccer they practiced dribbling , shooting and defending the goal. Art classes saw students complete their Mosiac art work and do a reflection on the same. Their Dance classes where fun filled wherein they used different props and created innovative dance moves using them. Wishing all our students in grade 2 A 'All the best' for their future ventures. It was a wonderful journey with all you lovely people on board.

Click Students continued their journey into the current unit ‘natural resources’. They inquired about the water cycle through an interesting experiment and gained knowledge about the different processes involved. Through discussion and brainstorming sessions, the students gained knowledge about the different forms and importance of coal. The students shared their understanding about the formation of coal with their peers. Students enjoyed a great session of take and talk wherein they spoke about the importance and uses of natural resources. During integration with English, students prepared a character sketch of main characters of the story ‘The natural garden’. They also created acrostic poems with the terms related to natural resources in their process journals. They also gained knowledge about natural gas and petroleum through various classroom engagements and story sessions. A guest lecture by Mr. S Chaturvedi was conducted in which students interacted with the guest speaker and gained knowledge about the production and conservation of coal. Students made presentation and shared their understanding about natural resources using iPads. During their English classes, students learnt how to use prepositions by describing the pictures given to them. Students participated in read aloud sessions for different stories. They prepared a script and enjoyed a role play on 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) followed by descriptive writing of the same. During their Math classes, students gained knowledge about symmetrical and asymmetrical objects through interesting classroom engagements. They also explored the compass and learnt about different directions. Students were introduced to different types of lines (perpendicular lines, parallel lines, line segment, ray) and angles (acute, right and obtuse) by exploring their classroom. Students were tuned into division and they gained insight into the concept of division. During their Hindi lessons students read ‘Upkaari ped’ and attempted ‘Listen and answer’ activity. They also practiced writing sentences and paragraph. They revisited grammar concepts like Paryaayvaachi (synonyms), vachan(singular -plural) and slogans. During their Hindi Ab-initio lessons, students revised ‘aa’ ‘i’ ‘ee’ ‘o’ ‘e’ maatraa. They also learnt the kavita ‘Chal mere ghode’. For music classes, the students were encouraged to write and compose jingles on their own. They were given a prior knowledge on what are jingles and how their tune should sound like. They also learnt the song "Summer Holidays” by Cliff Richard. During the dance classes, the students brushed up the basics of street jazz, funk jazz and hip hop. The students also stressed on core workouts along with flexibility workouts. During their Art classes the students created a mosaic piece of art by assembling small pieces of coloured glass or papers. Students continue to work on their Mosaic artwork, carefully cutting pieces of paper and pasting it. During their P.E classes students practised dribbling in football. They also practised kicking and passing the ball to the partner. They enjoyed playing short sided matches.
During their UOI classes, students concluded the unit on lifecycles with a field trip to the ‘Kegg farms’, later they did an end of unit reflection and attempted a Summative assessment. Students tuned into their new unit ‘Natural resources’ through an interesting activity wherein they sorted the various items into natural and man-made. Going further students wrote their understanding of resources and gained knowledge on the different natural and man-made resources through various interesting interactive activities and educational videos. There was a group discussion on where to find these natural resources with students illustrating the same in their process journals. Students also tuned into the concept of renewable and non-renewable resources and recorded their understanding. An English language activity was also integrated with the unit wherein students listened to the story ‘The red moon’ , took notes and illustrated the same. Students were tuned into language concepts like genders, singular and plural. They enhanced their listening and thinking skills by attempting a listening activity wherein a passage was read aloud to them and they had to draw and spot the prepositions therein. Students also attempted the spell bee dictation wherein they had to correct the misspelled words. During their Math classes students tuned into the concept of multiplication through a relay race activity and further continued to practice multiplication sums. They also practiced patterns and attempted a formative assessment on the concept. Students were also introduced to the concept of symmetry and enjoyed illustrating the same in their process journals. During their Hindi lessons students watched a video on the process of paper making and attempted a ‘Listen and answer’ activity. They picked up new vocabulary from the video. They enhanced their verbal skills by reciting a poem ‘Kaagaj’ with our special guests Mrs Mukti Agarwal, Mrs Komal Dua and Mrs Deepti Mishra in grades 2A,B and C respectively. During their Hindi Ab-initio lessons students learned to practice‘o’maatraa by speaking aloud words using the same. They also revised Falo ke naam, Rango ke naam,Ango ke naam . For their ICT students enjoyed playing Kahoot, an online quizzing tool on the topic ‘basics of computers’ and loved it. They were very excited and truly engaged. During Music classes, students have started learning the rhythm system in western music. They gained knowledge about while, half and quarter note. They also inquired about the speed of the songs according to these symbols. They sang the song ‘Count on me’ with karaoke track individually. In their Art classes the students learned paper mosaic art , they coloured their drawings using pencil colours , they learnt to cut small pieces of paper with scissors and pasted the pieces to complete their mosaic art. During their PE lessons students continued with their skating classes. They practised for the proper start when racing and participated in intra class competitions too.
In their UOI class, students gained knowledge on the lifecycles of different vertebrates. They made beautiful booklets, cutting- pasting activity etc. to learn about the different life cycles like that of a frog, bat, crocodile, plant, bird, salmon and even a meal worm. They also inquired about the life cycle of a fish using ipads. The third line of inquiry started where they gained knowledge on how the changes in environment are affecting the different life cycles of animals around the globe. They further attempted their formative assessment on the same. Students were tuned in to pronouns. They sorted different pronouns from their favourite book from the library, and penned them in their process journals. Students enhanced their thinking and listening skills by attempting ‘visual imagery’ on a poem by Risa Jordan. Going further, genders were introduced and students categorised them in four kinds. They further saw a video on alliteration and did a practice exercise in their process journals. Students practiced addition and subtraction by putting up shop counters on their tables and acting as vendors and customers. Students worked on rounding off numbers to nearest tens and hundreds. They practiced the same in their process journals and worksheets. Going further, they were introduced to the ordinal numbers and their uses. Students did some fun activity to practice the same in class. They were tuned into ‘currency’, where they got to know various facts on currency and its uses. They also inquired about the various currencies used across the world. They are currently practicing multiplication and working on their tables. In their Hindi lessons students watched a video ‘Bhukkhad illi’ (A very hungry caterpillar) (http://www.teachertube.com/video/the-very-hungry-caterpillar-178046) and attempted ‘Listen and answer’ activity. They also learnt ‘Titali ka jivan chakra’ (Life cycle of the butterfly) and picked up new vocabulary from it and made simple and meaningful sentences. In their Hindi Ab-initio lessons students, enhanced their verbal skills through reciting a poem ‘Titali aur kali’. In their ICT classes students were introduced to ‘digital book’ and learnt to illustrate and author an ebook related to the UOI using Book creator app on the iPad. In their Music classes the students have started learning the rhythm system in western music. They gained knowledge about while, half and quarter note. In their Art classes the students inquired about a famous paper mosaic artist, Mary Wells and observed some of her artwork and working style through a presentation. Students also discussed the process of paper mosaic art and made their personal drawing for their Mosaic art.
Students were tuned into the new unit ‘growth’ under the transdisciplinary theme “How the world works” through a nature walk wherein they differentiated between living and non-living things. Students gained knowledge about invertebrates and vertebrates through a class discussion. They participated in a role play on animal kingdom and strengthen their knowledge about classification of animal kingdom through online games. In their English classes, students were tuned into ‘shape’ poetry. Students discussed their views on ‘shape’ poetry and created poem for the same. They attempted the spell bee in which they made sentences using words from the spell bee . During their Math classes, students gained knowledge about bar graphs and discussed their importance in our daily lives. They also tuned into rounding off numbers through interesting activities and practiced rounding off to tens place using the number line. They enhanced their verbal skills by sequencing the story .They also practiced writing sentences . For the Ab-initio lessons students learned “e” maatraa and wrote words with the same like ‘seb’ ’kelaa’ ‘melaa’ etc. they viewed a video, learned new words like ‘rang’ ‘gulaal’ ‘gujiaa’ etc. and a poem related to Holi festival ‘holi aayee ,holi aayee’. Dance classes focused on practicing the routines for their UOI presentation. During PE classes, students practiced cricket and enhanced their skills of bowling, bating and fielding. They also played inter-section cricket matches.
Students continued their journey into the current unit ‘communications’ .They explored the various modes of communication used in the modern times and compared them to the modes of communication in the past. Students further gained knowledge about the different signs they see around them and discussed their relevance. They also gained insight into a ‘mime act’ and ‘nukkad natak’ and how they communicate a message to the audience. Students also attempted a formative assessment wherein they looked at pictures and wrote down how communication was done in olden days vs how it is done now. For their English classes, students gained knowledge with the concept of ‘onomatopoeia’ and later attempted a task sheet to further strengthen their knowledge. They practiced note/diary writing wherein they wrote to the person they loved the most. Students gained knowledge on how to create a book cover and later used their creativity and thinking skills appropriately. Students improved their listening and comprehension skills through a listening activity. They also attempted a spell bee dictation and found out meanings of words using a dictionary. For their Math classes, students tuned into the concept of pictograph wherein they learned how to interpret data and convert it into a pictorial graph. They attempted a summative task that tested their knowledge on concepts like measurement of distance, quantity and capacity. Students revised ‘Sanyuktaakshar’ and ‘Sanyuktvyanjan’ during lessons. They enhanced their verbal skills through sequencing and retelling the story of ‘Laalchi Kutta’. They also attempted a ‘listen and answer’ activity. Students carried out an online collaborative activity on a Padlet wall during ICT lessons. Subsequently they explored their skills to click a selfie using a laptop and used them as emoticons to express their feelings. There was a class activity wherein students had to write the maximum number of instruments they could recall in 40 seconds. Students also presented various individual or duet songs so that they could develop the understanding of the concept of major and minor notes. The scales of their own voices and voice modulations was used in the compositions to understand notes. During dance lessons, students practiced a routine for their UOI presentation.
In their Art classes, students connected to the music in nature and completed their painting using mixed media. Students played badminton and practiced skills like batting, bowling and fielding while playing cricket, during PE classes. Students pursued the first line of inquiry as they explored different kinds of emotions and expressions like happiness, sadness, fear, anger, exhaustion and confusion. Students did an interesting activity wherein they took turns to pick up chits with different scenarios and expressed themselves. They also read out stories and identified the protagonist in accordance with different situations in the story. A research to find out about emoticons and understand their role in conveying information and feelings was also undertaken. Students brainstormed and shared their knowledge of research work on the past and present communication. Students learnt about different communication devices used in past such as smoke signals, carrier pigeons, early telephones and letters. A guest lecture was conducted by Mr. Tabrez wherein he talked about International maritime signal flags. Students also gained knowledge about forms of modern art and paintings through a guest lecture conducted by Mr. Mehta. Students enjoyed their field trip to ‘Sanskriti Kendra’ where they inquired and gained knowledge about different Indian textiles, terracotta art, sculptures and figurines from the tribal areas of India. During English lessons, students gained knowledge about adjectives, synonyms and antonyms. They also gained insight into writing a character sketch. They enhanced their reading and comprehension skills through the study of the novel “Getting Granny’s glasses”. Students used their thinking skills while describing granny’s character and sketched using adjectives to describe the character. Students participated in different activities to measure capacity and distance while exploring Math. They also attempted a formative task in which they estimated the weight of different objects followed by actual measurements to cross check their guess. They practiced conversion of units through interesting task sheets. Students gained knowledge about importance and role of the element mercury (Hg) in the thermometer. In their Hindi lessons, students watched ‘kathputli Ka naach’ (Puppet show) and attempted a ‘listen and answer’ activity .They enhanced their verbal skills while reciting a poem ‘Suraj jaldi aana ji’. They were introduced to ‘Sanyuktaakshar’ through textual matter. Hindi Ab-initio lessons students helped to revise ‘aa’ maatraa and students wrote words in their process journals. Oral gintee (counting) for numbers 1 to 25 was undertaken . Students also learned and wrote new words using ‘Vayanjan’ (letters) ‘ta’, ‘ha’, ‘cha’ in their process journals. ICT classes focused on collaboration. Students reviewed infographic for peer in order to learn, complement and give inputs about each other's work. In the Music classes, students practiced to play the scales of "Twinkle twinkle" on the Xylophone. They also tried singing “The Earth” song by Michael Jackson. Students learned about the famous music maestro Mozart and heard his compositions played through the recordings. Dance classes focused on practicing the routines for their UOI presentation. During PE lessons, students gained knowledge about the rules of cricket and practiced skills like batting, bowling and fielding.
The year started by tuning into the new unit ‘communication’ through an activity wherein the students looked at the banners displayed in class and brainstormed to guess their new unit. They further found out about the different kinds of communication through the ‘See-Think-Wonder’ activity. Students gained knowledge on the ‘communication cycle’ and discussed its importance in the process of communication. Students enhanced their social and thinking skills through an activity wherein they sorted pictures given to them into means of verbal and non-verbal communication. Students also found out about different means of communication along with the factors that hinder a good communication. Various videos were shown to students to differentiate between the verbal, non-verbal, visual and written communication. Students did a role play to reflect their understanding on the different kinds of communication. In their English class, students worked on their comprehension skills by reading the ‘Granny’s glasses’ and answered questions from the text. They also did a sequencing activity post which they were introduced to ‘diary writing’ and they made diary entries about what they did during their winter holidays. The concept of adjectives was introduced wherein students practiced describing themselves by using adjectives and also writing diary entry about their mother. In their Math class, students were tuned into the new unit of ‘Measurement’. They worked in groups to find out about the unit of measurement and used different measuring tools to measure the different things. Later they presented their work in class showcasing their communication and social skills. Students also tried their hands at measuring different objects in class like tables, process journals, pencils etc. Students explored the different measurement tools along with different units of measurement. In their Hindi lessons, students read the story ‘Meethi Saarangi’ and attempted ‘Listen and answer’. They picked up new vocabulary from the story and were able to form simple and meaningful sentences. Ab-initio – During their Ab-initio classes, students revisited the concepts covered in Term 1. In their Art classes, students integrated their current unit by learning how to communicate through visual art and the role of warm and cool colours to express oneself. They also learnt about the different time periods of Pablo Picasso's painting history (black, blue and rose period). During ICT, students learnt to create an infographic in Microsoft Word on the topic "Communication". They gained knowledge on the important tools and elements used in creating an infographic. Lessons in cricket were introduced during PE classes. Students were introduced to the rules of cricket and practised skills like batting, bowling and fielding. In their Dance classes students started with basic ‘warming up’ on the choreography for their UOI presentation. In Music the students practiced various techniques of vocal warmups in western music and learned the kookaburra song and a motivational song- ‘Umeedon wali dhoop’.
Students continued to pursue the second line of inquiry - ‘functions of our body systems’ in their current unit ‘body systems’. They revisited the digestive, circulatory and respiratory systems also attempted a multiple choice questionnaire on the body systems as a Formative assessment. Tuning into the skeletal system was done through a visit to the biology lab wherein students observed the human size skeleton. This was followed by a visual presentation and the students reflected their understanding using a graphic organiser. Students tuned into the nervous system by watching educational videos followed by a classroom discussion, they also attempted an interesting activity wherein they had to use their brain power, think of their favourite activity and then list the commands their brain would give them in order to conduct that activity. Students attempted their second Formative assessment which was an integration with ICT and they displayed their understanding of the body system of their choice using the ‘Vittle’ app. Students further pursued the third line of inquiry ‘Ways in which we can aid the wellbeing of our body systems’ through a guest lecture which was conducted by Dr. Indu wherein she shared ways to keep all the body systems healthy. Students attempted a Summative assessment to conclude the unit, an interesting task of cutting, identifying and pasting the essential organs was given. They were also given various situations wherein they had to identify the organs affected due to a particular health problem and give advice on how to treat the condition. The highlight of the week was the Student Led Conference, through which students recalled their learning journey and appraised their parents of the same. They had fun playing simple games related to Maths and English with their parents. In their English classes, students continued their novel study of ‘Getting Granny’s glasses’ and attempted a Formative assessment wherein they had to predict and retell the story and identify sentences with verbs from Chapter 3. In their Math classes, the students revisited the concept of subtraction and attempted sums in their process journals. In their Hindi classes the students recited the poem 'Aankh dikhaae manmohak drishy' and discussed about 'healthy habits'. They wrote a paragraph about 'humaaraa shareer'. They enjoyed the story 'Adhilk balwaan kaun' and found out 'sarvanaam shabd' (pronoun) from the same. They also learnt 'ref & paden' (various forms of letter 'र'). In Hindi ab-initio classes, students revisited the concepts covered so far through various engaging games and activities.
In their Music classes, students learnt different Christmas carols like ‘Ring Ring’, ‘Rudolph the red nosed’, ‘I am a little star’ and performed them during the X-mas theme based assembly. In their Art classes students completed their Warli art composition by outlining it with black sketch pens. In their P.E classes students were introduced to the basics of playing Cricket. Students pursued the second line of inquiry - ‘functions of our body systems’ in their current unit ‘body systems’. They tuned into the digestive system through a visual presentation followed by a discussion about the path of food transportation in our body. Students inquired about the functions of the digestive system through an experiment in the biology lab and gained knowledge about digestion of food during a guest lecture conducted by Ms. Rabeya Meraj. Students brainstormed and discussed the different ways to keep the digestive system healthy. They enhanced their social skills through a group activity wherein they arranged the cut-outs of the different organs in order to make a human digestive system. Students inquired about the respiratory system by performing an interesting experiment ‘Fogging of the mirror’. They gained knowledge about the various organs of the respiratory system and the function of lungs by performing an experiment. Students pursued the third line of inquiry ‘Ways in which we can aid the wellbeing of our body systems’ through a guest lecture which was conducted by Mr. Tarun Tokas and Dr. Tapasya wherein they shared ways to keep the respiratory system healthy through various sports activities and students did reflection for the same. Students tuned into the circulatory system through an interesting video post which they shared their understanding about organs and the function of the circulatory system. In their English classes, students brainstormed about vowels and consonants through interesting games. They gained knowledge about articles through an interesting ‘post box’ strategy and knowledge based discussions with their peers. Students enhanced their reading skills by participating in read aloud sessions from the book ‘Granny’s glasses’. Students further practiced articles through interesting online games. In their Math classes, the students discussed and wrote their understanding about subtraction. They also practiced subtraction sums using number lines and fun worksheets. An interesting activity of ‘paper chits’ was conducted which further strengthened their understanding of subtraction. Students also learnt about borrowing in subtraction using place value kit. In their Hindi classes students revisited grammar concepts through various activities. They learnt and wrote 'shareer ke, angon ke naam' (names of the body parts) through video and made sentences from the same. They also learnt and wrote 'paryaayvaachee shabd' (synonyms).
In Hindi ab-initio classes, students learnt maatra ‘aa’ and enjoyed participating in knowledge based games. In ICT students were introduced to Hour of Code, an online coding activity observed worldwide during Computer Science Education week in December and they learnt the basics of coding using blocks for various themes like Angry Birds, Starwars, Minecraft, Maona and Anna and Else. In their Art classes, students inquired about ‘Warli’ art and created a composition of the same using oil pastels. In their Music classes, students learnt different Christmas carols like ‘Ring Ring’, ‘Rudolph the red nosed’, ‘I am a little star’ and performed them individually during lessons.
