MUSINGS AT GRADE 2A
Pursuing the second line of inquiry in the unit related to homes the students enhanced their research skills and conducted a survey to find out the factors that decide why we choose a home. Students also gained knowledge about the process of building a house along with the different materials used for the construction. A guest lecture was conducted by the PYP coordinator Ms. Arpita Saxena, who spoke about her experiences of homes in Switzerland. Students enhanced their thinking skills through an interesting compare and contrast strategy wherein they brainstormed on which type of living is better, society or individual houses and wrote about the same in their process journals. Students enhanced their reading skills through a read aloud session of the book ‘My House’. They enhanced their thinking and writing skills through an activity wherein a poem ‘The Home I Love’ by Kay Hoffman was shown to them, post which they wrote their understanding of the poem in their own words. They also made a list of words using phonograms ‘tion’ and ‘ture’ , ‘unk’ and ‘ick’ some which they illustrated/ framed sentences with .Students also tuned into the concept of common and proper nouns . Students explored the concept of place value by working with ‘Golden beads’ manipulatives. They discussed about the importance of place value and how interchange of number digits will affect its place value. Students enjoyed playing online games on place value and they also learned about representing numbers on abacus. Students explored number names, ordering, comparing of numbers and also had a discussion on reasons of having number names. In their Hindi classes the students wrote character sketches of the various characters in the story 'kuyein kaa paanee'. They learnt new words and made sentences and wrote 'samaan arth waale shabd' from the same story. They revised counting through various activities and practiced & presented a role play related to their unit 'Homes'. P.E- Students enhanced their basketball and skating skills during their physical education classes. Music –Students learnt to play the ‘cajol’ instrument and enjoyed learning the song ‘teri hai zamein’ Ab initio- Students learnt akshars 'la' , 'na' , 'sa', ba' and made simple 2 letter shabds like 'sab' and 'bas'. They were also introduced to different body parts through 'Simon says' activity.
