MUSINGS AT GRADE 2A
Grade 2A presented an assembly on ‘fractions’ and reflected their understanding of the same. UOI- The students were tuned into the new transdisciplinary theme , ’Who we are’ by assessing their prior knowledge on the body systems. They were also introduced to the internal and external body parts, where they did an activity of finding out the differences and similarities between the two. Students also attempted their summative assessment on the last unit ‘Food’. Math- Students did an interesting activity on fractions, and enjoyed making their own cakes by cutting , pasting and colouring them. Summative assessment on ‘fractions’ was also attempted by the students. English- In their English class students did the character sketch of the famous writer- author Mr. Ruskin Bond. They further did a novel study by reading one of his famous works, ‘Granny’s glasses’. They further enhanced their reading skills with the read aloud sessions. Students also worked on their writing skills by doing creative writing and also learnt to make inferences. ICT- Students learnt how to manipulate size, font, and colours of text and use word art, textbox, underline, bold, italics in Microsoft Word. They also learnt to insert images related the unit of inquiry using shape tool. Hindi- In their Hindi classes students shared and wrote their experience about the camp. They learnt 'vachan badalo' (singular-plural) through a video. They read a paragraph in context to the same. Art- In their art class students inquired into Warli art. They also observed some visuals of it and created a composition of Warli art using their thinking skills. P.E.- The students practiced dribbling in football in the free area and around the court. They also practiced kicking and passing the ball to the partner. They also enjoyed playing short sided matches.

Kids had a fun-filled time at the camp and returned with the wonderful memories to cherish till their next camp. Students pursued the third line of inquiry ‘use of machines while processing food’ in their current unit ‘food’. They gained knowledge on the machines used while processing different food items. Students watched educational videos on how some of their favourite food items like jam ,cakes and juices are processed in factories with the help of machines. A group discussion was conducted on the importance and use of machines during bulk production of food items. Students later reflected their understanding by illustrating and writing in their process journals .Students strengthened their previously gained knowledge on processed and unprocessed food through activities like ‘identify-name-reflect’ where the students had sort different food items as per processed and unprocessed foods using the Venn-diagram learning strategy. Students gained knowledge on how to read food labels and captured their observations on the ‘Y-chart’. Students enhanced their social and communication skills through a debate conducted on a food related topic. In their English classes students wrote a paragraph on how they spent their time during the midterm break, they were instructed to use verbs to express themselves. Students enhanced their comprehension skills through an activity wherein they read the story on Halloween and later interpreted it by attempting a questionnaire. Students were assessed on their spellings through a spell bee. Their communication skills were enhanced through an extempore session wherein they had to speak on a given topic. In their Math classes, students strengthened their understanding of fractions through various activities like playing interactive online games , using the ‘jodo gyaan’ kit to create different fractions .Students also attempted a formative assessment through a ‘Fraction Bingo’ activity. A cut and paste activity was conducted where they had to match and paste the fraction with the corresponding figure given to them. In their Hindi classes, students learnt & wrote new words from the paragraph 'Humara aahaar' . They were introduced to 'viram chihn' (punctuation marks) & 'sanyukt vyanjan' and wrote the same. Ab-Initio Hindi students revisited the previously learnt topics and enjoyed participating in knowledge based games. In the ICT classes, students were introduced to a word processing app. They learnt how to open a new file and create a document in Microsoft Word.They were encouraged to type few lines on how they celebrated Diwali/Halloween of their choice.
Pursuing the second line of Inquiry “Why are foods processed” under the current unit on ‘food’, students enhanced their thinking skills while identifying the source of the selected food product and then spoke about the processing of that food product. They made a real life connection through an interesting activity in which they made lemonade in the classroom and recorded the changes observed in the lemonade every day. Students classified the differences between processed and unprocessed juice by watching a video. Social Skills of the students were enhanced through a pair activity wherein the students made a list of ingredients on various food labels given to them and observed important things like the red and green dots on food labels , the names of official food licensing organisations and terms like preservatives and additives, later they compared their food label with their elbow partners. They also discussed why the usage of those ingredients is necessary in food products. Students enhanced their communication skills through a group talk on the benefits of organic and non-organic food items shown to them. They also visited the school kitchen and later did a reflection on their visit in their process journals. Students shared their knowledge about processing of food products by arranging the pictures given to them and created a flow chart. A guest lecture was conducted by Ms. Urmil Yadav where she shared the advantages and disadvantages of processed foods later the students reflected their understanding in their process journals. Students honed their social skills while doing flameless cooking, they enjoyed preparing the dishes and identified the ingredients used. Students enhanced their listening skills through a unit related story ‘Dr. Zee’s apple factory’ and discussed their understanding about the story. A ‘Just A Minute’ session was conducted in which the students spoke about all home remedies or medicines which are made at home using various herbs to keep healthy or to cure common illness. In their Hindi classes students have learnt and written milte-julte shabd (rhyming words) from the poem 'Chaat' and created sentences from the same. They learnt to make 'Fruit salad' and wrote the recipe in their process journals. Students named the fruits & vegetables used and illustrated the same. They also discussed healthy and unhealthy food. Ab-Initio Hindi students did a reflection on kitchen visit for making salad wherein they gained knowledge of words like ‘kheera’, ‘namak’, ‘ dahi’ etc and practiced writing all ‘vyanjan’ learnt so far. In their English classes, students enhanced their writing skills by observing differences in the pictures given to them. They also created a story using a graphic organizer based on the pictures given to them. Students were tuned into verbs through an activity in which they identified a word that represents an action from the sentences given to them. They practiced usage of verbs by describing various pictures using verbs. Students attempted a sentence builder activity wherein they selected two sentences and extended them into paragraphs . In their Math classes, students used mental math strategies to strengthen the concept of addition. A Summative assessment for addition was conducted through an interesting activity wherein a shop -like -environment was created and different items were displayed along with their price tags. Students were tuned into fraction through various manipulatives and they made pictorial representations for the fractions they selected. Online Quiz sessions were also done for the students to strengthen their understanding of the concept. In the ICT classes, Students enjoyed creating various illustrations on Diwali using Paint tools. In their Art classes, students are creating a still life composition using the technique of pointillism with poster colours. In their Music class students sang a song “ sa se sagar ki lehrein “ and learned the scales on the xylophone. In P.E students continued to strengthen their football and skating skills through during practice sessions and coaching . In their Dance classes students chose different food items as the base for their choreography and created a dance routine on the journey of food. With festivity in the air , students thoroughly enjoyed painting diyas, making rangolis and scaring their classmates for Halloween.
Provocation to the new unit ‘food, was done through a prior knowledge assessment wherein the students used their thinking skills and categorised food items. Through this activity they were tuned into the new unit of inquiry and their prior knowledge on food were assessed too. Students enhanced their thinking skills and categorised a variety of food items. Students were tuned into the first line of inquiry ‘How food changes from farm to table’ through various interesting activities which was followed by discussions and reflections in their process journals. They enhanced their research skills by going on a nature walk and exploring the different kinds of plants and later used their writing skills to pen down their reflections in the process journals. The students are able to differentiate between herbs, shrubs, bushes, creepers and trees. Students gained knowledge on the different kinds of crops grown in India through an interesting activity and were also given a demonstration on the process of cultivation. They found out about the journey of food from farm to factory and from factory to consumer. Students also made a real life connect through an interesting activity where they sowed the seeds and will continue to make observations on the process of growth of a plant. They also had fun dancing on the tunes of the rhyme, “ How oats, peas, beans and barley grow” which was integrated with their Unit of Inquiry . In their ICT classes,students explored various shape tools and created illustrations on healthy and unhealthy food. In their English classes students enhanced their listening skills through an activity wherein they listened to a unit related story ‘Charlie and Lola – I will not ever never eat a tomato’ and later had a discussion and attempted a task sheet based on that. A Formative assessment was conducted wherein the students read a unit related poem and filled in the blanks with rhyming words. Students were introduced to the steps involved in note-taking wherein they read poems from the books ‘Food for thought’ and ‘Poem on seeds’ and gained knowledge on the skill of taking notes. They were read various poems by Dr. Seuss after which they used their thinking skills to create a small poem by implementing their understanding of the same. In their Math classes students practiced addition using the number line. They also learnt carrying over and started solving word problems using the “RUCSAC” strategy. They were further introduced to the skip counting. In their Hindi classes students learnt names of fruits & vegetables and illustrated the same. They also discussed the healthy and unhealthy foods and enjoyed reciting the poem 'Chaat' while learning new words. Hindi Ab Initio- In their ab initio classes students revised and practiced writing all the akshars learnt so far. They further learnt ‘Rangon ke naam’ and ‘Falon ke naam’. In Art classes students inquired about the artist Claude Monet and observed his artwork. They learnt about still life composition. They also inquired into the technique of Pointillism and were exposed to some of the artwork done using this technique. Students practiced various vocal warm up exercises for voice modulations in their Music classes. They sang a song “ sa se sagar ki lehrein “ and learned the scales on the xylophone. In their PE classes students were demonstrated the ways to hold the racket properly in badminton. They were explained basic rules for service. The students attempted to play the shuttle over the net using a forehand action.
The students marked the grandparents day by posting their handwritten post cards to their grandparents. They innocently penned down their thoughts and shared their special feelings for them. They excitedly visited the post office to personally post their cards. Pursuing the 3rd line of Inquiry – ‘Homes reflect personal identities’, under the current unit homes, guest lectures were conducted by teachers Ms. Deepa and Ms Snigdha. The teachers represented different cultures and spoke about how personal identities reflect in the homes they live. Each lecture was followed by a reflection done by the students in their process journals. This was followed by a brief discussion on different income groups and students were shown how to draw and plan a 2D layout of a house. Students also attempted a formative assessment wherein they had to decorate a given layout of the house with pictures. The unit was concluded with a Summative assessment and a final reflection. In the English classes the concepts of punctuation, common and proper nouns were further strengthened through various classroom engagements. Spell bee was conducted and students enhanced their writing skills by creating meaningful sentences of the chosen words. They also read a poem ‘Bless my home’ by Helen Taylor thereby working on their thinking skills by explaining the meaning of the poem. In their Math classes the students revisited concepts like number bonds, comparing numbers, ascending and descending order, place value and face value through various classroom activities and practiced these concepts in their process journals and task sheets. The concept of odd and even numbers was strengthened wherein the students attempted interesting task sheets and various activities with real life connect. Students later attempted a formative assessment to evaluate their understanding of the concepts. In their Hindi classes the students read and discussed the story 'Rohan ka ghar'. They also learnt and recited the poem 'oont chalaa' and found out ‘milte-julte shabd’ (rhyming words) from the same. Students enjoyed ‘paheliyaan’ (riddles), tongue twisters and Stapoo during Hindi saptaah (week). In ICT students learnt to use keywords for internet search related to their unit of inquiry on different types of homes across the globe. They explored various tools in Photo story 3 to create an audio visual presentation and were proud to create a digital story in a form of a movie. In ab initio class students learnt akshar ‘Ka’,'Gha' and ‘Ma’, practicing to write and illustrate them. They also did an activity on matching the names of colours to thrir respective colours. In Art the students inquired about the artist ‘Claude Monet’ and were exposed to his work on landscapes. They created various types of landscapes with pencil and wax colours and used different patterns and shapes. In P.E the students strengthened their skills of dribbling, passing and shooting while practising basketball and football. In the Music class, students were observed on their music skills while singing “teri hai zameen". Students did a lot of strengthening workouts, which included abdomen and rhythm workouts. Students are learning street jazz ensuring compliance to basic jazz elements like isolations and style in their dance classes.
Pursuing the second line of inquiry in the unit related to homes the students enhanced their research skills and conducted a survey to find out the factors that decide why we choose a home. Students also gained knowledge about the process of building a house along with the different materials used for the construction. A guest lecture was conducted by the PYP coordinator Ms. Arpita Saxena, who spoke about her experiences of homes in Switzerland. Students enhanced their thinking skills through an interesting compare and contrast strategy wherein they brainstormed on which type of living is better, society or individual houses and wrote about the same in their process journals. Students enhanced their reading skills through a read aloud session of the book ‘My House’. They enhanced their thinking and writing skills through an activity wherein a poem ‘The Home I Love’ by Kay Hoffman was shown to them, post which they wrote their understanding of the poem in their own words. They also made a list of words using phonograms ‘tion’ and ‘ture’ , ‘unk’ and ‘ick’ some which they illustrated/ framed sentences with .Students also tuned into the concept of common and proper nouns . Students explored the concept of place value by working with ‘Golden beads’ manipulatives. They discussed about the importance of place value and how interchange of number digits will affect its place value. Students enjoyed playing online games on place value and they also learned about representing numbers on abacus. Students explored number names, ordering, comparing of numbers and also had a discussion on reasons of having number names. In their Hindi classes the students wrote character sketches of the various characters in the story 'kuyein kaa paanee'. They learnt new words and made sentences and wrote 'samaan arth waale shabd' from the same story. They revised counting through various activities and practiced & presented a role play related to their unit 'Homes'. P.E- Students enhanced their basketball and skating skills during their physical education classes. Music –Students learnt to play the ‘cajol’ instrument and enjoyed learning the song ‘teri hai zamein’ Ab initio- Students learnt akshars 'la' , 'na' , 'sa', ba' and made simple 2 letter shabds like 'sab' and 'bas'. They were also introduced to different body parts through 'Simon says' activity.
Grade 2 had a unique experience selecting their senate member based on the learning profile attributes. Students explored the concept of measurement which included several topics like non – standard and standard measurement, length and breadth. This was done through various interesting activities and learning strategies like estimation compare and contrast using Venn diagram, interactive videos, story telling etc. Students made connections on how different locations and climate influences the types of homes. This was done through an engaging ‘map marking’ activity wherein they identified the models of different types of homes and mapped them across the continents. Students also gained knowledge about the climate and types of houses in Russia through a guest lecture led by Ms. Elena. The story of the 'Three little pigs' was shown to the students post which they recorded their reflection on a story map. Students enhanced their thinking and writing skills by attempting a picture composition wherein they chose a picture and wrote a short paragraph about it. They also developed their thinking and social skills via activities like ‘predict and retell’ a story. In their dance class they had fun trying the Jazz dance form. In their Hindi classes, students discussed the essential agreements and the learner profile through stories like 'Imaandaar lakadhara' and 'Bakaree ka bachcha aur bhediya'. They revised maatraas and watched a video related to 'kachchaa ghar' (mud house) and wrote words related to the same. Students enjoyed the story 'Kuwein kaa paanee' and reinforced their knowledge about kachcha ghar. They also did a comprehension to reflect their understanding to the same. In ICT students were introduced to PicCollage an ipad application to create a digital collage. They created a collage of images that documented their learning process and led to a colourful stimulation for reflection on their favourite Olympians. In their Ab-initio classes the students learned the letter ‘ba’ and illustrated the objects, animals etc. that started with the letter. They also learned about the colours and their names in hindi.
The new academic session began with an ice-breaker activity wherein the students shared their experience of summer vacations with great zeal and enthusiasm. They developed their social skills by revisiting the Transdisciplinary themes, Learner Profile attributes and collectively brainstorming and creating their class essential agreements. Provocation of the unit – “Homes” was done by watching a video on homeless people followed by a discussion on the basic needs of human beings wherein the students understood the difference between needs and wants. This concept was further strengthened by various activities like drawing a T-chart, discussion and understanding of the Central idea and posting questions on the wonder wall. The students strengthened their thinking and communication skills by sharing their thoughts on how and why homes can be different. The concept of homes was further strengthened by sharing the different types of homes and an inquiry was done into the difference in their locations and the construction materials used. In their English classes students strengthened their knowledge of nouns. They honed their thinking and social skills through a pair activity and made a list of nouns used in various sports. Students also gained knowledge on the concepts like phonograms and through various interesting activities. In the Math classes the students gained knowledge on 2D and 3D shapes. These concepts were shared via various interesting activities like interactive videos, games and craft activities. Assembly led by Grade 2A on news this week.
